Thread: Netgear WG511 Wireless PC Card stopped working after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

last year decided try linux , installed ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal onto dell latitude c600 notebook (pentium iii, 512mb system memory). able netgear wg511 wireless pc card (pcmcia) work (ndiswrapper process) reading postings in forum (thanks!). able regular software updates through pcmcia card throughout year until last saturday when informed no more available natty narwhal -- upgrade available. took upgrade. after several hours , reboot in ubuntu 11.10 (new me) unity graphical desktop. again checked software updates , saw 12.04lts precise pangolin available. learned lts short long term support (i thought might give me stable environment upon continue learning linux). again took upgrade. 12.04lts upgrade downloaded using wireless netgear wg511 pcmcia card. difficulty encountered occurred several hours , toward end of download process. review of forum's postings suggested change "download from: server united states" "download from: main server" on "ubuntu software" tab on "software sources". upgrade download started again , picked left off. once download finished ubuntu 12.04lts completed installation couple of hours later. although 2 times toward end of installation process popup window asked me make decision sort of file conflict. both times chose go new 12.04lts file on existing file (possible mistake?). , after reboot in ubuntu 12.04lts netgear wireless pc card no longer worked , no wireless options appeared under wireless configuration icon in top right corner of desktop. able ping computer on wired ethernet lan test of network connectivity. , review of forum's postings suggested download "linux-firmware_nonfree-1.11.all.deb" package , install terminal session using command "sudo dpkg -i". did , result bunch of files installed /int/firmware directory. pcmcia card still not work. wanted confirm still had windows driver in ndiswrapper pcmcia card, not know how this. ran application "additional drivers" produced window statement "no proprietary drivers in use on system."

please advise how can pcmcia card work ubuntu 12.04lts (but please remember still quite new of this). other similar posts forum requested provide additional information. , commands , results of commands follow:

unfortunately there bug in ndiswrapper in 12.04 stops driver installing. had same problem in lubuntu 12.04 same netgear card , solved using is, think, way working, ie compiling ndiswrapper following info at:-

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11970543
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1967383
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/wi...er/ndiswrapper - (section 4)

not difficult may seem, takes while compile , go through compared normal installation. make sure follow instructions fully, , think first link easiest follow.

luck!
