don't here routes need add server machine.
network follows:

connect internet via cable modem has address 188.x.x.x
cable modem plugged wireless router, gives adresses machines in network. server has address 192.168.1.3. trying connect vpn (somehow) set according given source outside network (namely, wireless 3g modem ppp0).

tried setups openvpn, had no luck, reading community ubuntu documentation instructions. thick above easier solution, if worked.

in advance help, muuch appreciated!

there few steps here. first step (following instructions linked to) setting vpn server. second step setting vpn client (the laptop you'll use outside in). access server outside, must forward port through router (or through modem if has router too) server. default vpn port 1194.

haven't setup pptp server , not vpn kubuntu. i've setup openvpn servers ubuntu , on router (dd-wrt firmware or tomato). can't specific steps of setting server. however, there should server logfile can monitor debug things. fyi, pptp not known secure. openvpn allows higher level of security.

far port forwarding goes: it's important understand whether modem has router in or not. external ip 188.xxx.xxx.xxx . ip router gets on wan when connect it? should able find out in router's connection status (login http://192.168.1.1 while connected wireless or lan port). if gets same 188.xxx.xxx.xxx ip, modem isn't running router too; if else 10.xxx.xxx.xxx modem has own router , firewall (very common these days). in case, you'll have forward 1194 through both firewalls - modem's router's firewall , router's firewall server.

also, cable company give static ip? 188.xxx.xxx.xxx ever change? if so, you'll want run dynamic dns account somewhere track changing ip - otherwise, won't able connect vpn next time 188.xxx.xxx.xxx ip changes else.

if chance router capable of running dd-wrt firmware, consider installing it. run vpn server directly in router , not have complication on kubuntu server (and you'd able wake remotely if don't want leave on 24/7). dd-wrt has built-in controls dynamic dns service.
