Thread: Ubuntu is broken... any recommendations?

after testing ubuntu 12.04 , gnome 3 shell 2 weeks on usb key, i've been pleased both , decided install ubuntu on vista hard drive. used perfectdisk defrag, prep, , edit partitions. after few initial problems, vista working fine in new configuration several days.

i've had few major issues since installing ubuntu. fyi, set 3 accounts: untouched unity, tweaked unity, , gnome 3 shell.

after installing ubuntu, vista fail boot grub, , boot "last known configuration" option in windows recovery menu. decided wasn't acceptable trade-off , repaired mbr.

installed easybcd, boots vista, main ubuntu account gnome 3 shell not open, throwing "failed load session gnome" error. other accounts still work, screen stretched, , monitor's resolution isn't shown in display settings. tried repair procedures terminal lost access account entirely. know should have backed files , can't figure out how access them.

@ point feel exhausted , don't know next. want recover files if possible. want keep access vista applications. want repair or reinstall gnome 3 shell. hate idea of reinstalling , losing 2 nights of tweaking , updating.

here questions , thoughts have in aftermath of installation:
- should forget dual booting , install ubuntu on external hd? there significant performance drop using method? don't want run usb stick; it's slow.

- read on someone's blog keep vista , ubuntu files in separate partition, protecting them system corruption , sharing them between oses. think might if can ubuntu working again.

- stability , support of ubuntu, software center , update manager, gnome3 seems crippled , many add-ons/features don't work properly. if prefer gnome 3 on unity , use exclusively, should stick ubuntu or go os?

sorry rambling post, seems when i've got figured out, rules keep changing, , i'm losing resolve. advice.

there should absolutely no issue booting vista , linux together.
use gparted partitioning, never heard of tool used.

understand there remix gnome images
