pixel displays sizes

i downloaded royalty free image 732(w) x 900(h) 72dpi. however, in browser, or in of default 'image' programs have in computer, image opens in 1/2 size. because if did math @ 72dpi, picture should display @ 10 inches.

it understanding computer monitor resolution determine size , monitor resolution 72 96dpi. yet picture being displayed in browser (and other programs) @ 140dpi, generating image 1/2 size expect (about 5 inches wide).

the funny thing when open in adobe acrobat, same 5inch display marked being 50% displayed, when change view 100%, picture closer 10inches expect.

can explain apparent default shrinking display??????

thank you,

most programs assume thye ppi when not in metadata. photoshop assumes 72ppi. make sure ppi in metadata. in photoshop use save instead of save web , devices.

save includes metadata, save web can save without metadata or portions of it, depending on settings , version of photoshop have. if remember correctly earlier versions did not add metadata @ since main use of save web was web @ time approx. 72ppi

in photoshop, make sure resample not checked in image size dialog box. having checked alter pixel dimentions, not want.
