Editing in Camera Raw

i newbie, trying learn image editing using adobe tools. have basic question features of camera raw. see both shadows/highlights , black/white slider editing image in camera raw.what wanted know why both these essential. why cant have shadows , highlights , shadows indicate black colour settings , highlights indicate white colour settings. looking forward a reply soon.

while these sliders may seem same, there different.  black , whte slider should control end points of image: brighten or darken (add white or black) the extreams of image.  shadow , highlight, while making areas lighter or darker control localized contrast.  if want more detail in shadows, want increase shadow slider.  case darkest parts of image shift past pure black, use black slider nudge values pure black.  same highlight areas.
