Thread: New to Ubuntu Help


i excited here. first let me explain system , problem.
running win xp on custom made computer, have had little problems several years. amd64 1.8ghz processor asus mother board, 2 internal hard drives. (1-sata, , 1-ide), maxed out on ram.
downloaded both 32bit , 64bit version desktop ubuntu, made disc out of each one. unplugged 2 internal hard drive protect them, plugged in 1 additional ide hard drive, , formatted win xp, no problem. put in ubuntu disc, powered down powered up, installed no problem. powered down, powered without disc in dvd drive program resides on hard drive. takes long time past bios boot screen, , gets screen gives option select ubuntu, ubuntu safe mode, memory test, or win xp (these abbreviated descriptions), select ubuntu , gets black screen looks though @ command prompt says "initrafms>" , wont else. can 1 offer advice, have tried above procedure current version 32bit, 64bit, , earlier version of ubuntu down loaded, same results.

welcome forums.

may video issue or other boot option. have tried nomodeset? have use on first boot until install proprietary video drivers nvidia card.

how set nomodeset , other kernel boot options in grub2

on first boot after install, press e on getting grub bootloader menu.
hold shift bios boot menu if 1 system installed.
using arrow keys navigate , delete quiet , splash , type word nomodeset in place
press ctrl , x boot (low graphics mode), install nvidia driver suggested ubuntu
