Thread: Ubuntu creates partitions on its own= can't mount HD

*clears throat* hello there! i'm brand new these parts , linux...
have installed ubuntu 12.04 , been running past month. love it! though stumbled on issues...
bought new internal harddrive (wd caviar black series 1 tb) , reason here... there problem mounting drive.

@ first, plugged in drive , showed in bios, ubuntu started there no visible unit mounted on "computer" (as other units).
googled issue , tried find way list disks physically connected in hopes of getting confirmation actual disk working (as said; show in bios).
didn't work suggestions involved typing commands in terminal... not fond of.
got idea in ubuntu version (don't know if earlier versions have too) have installed seems have gui. can bypass terminal doing system maintenance.
searched programs via hub , found "disk utility" , there disk listed not mounted!

came conclusion needed formatting show (i think way works in windows, right? why?).
formatted disk (filesystem ntfs) , voila! mount disk , right world. rebooted system , crashed. , can repeated infinite number of times , same results.
after reboot however: disk (i named 1tb) still visible on "computer" had duplicate oddly enough. tried accessing both , error msg reading "unable mount 1tb".
went "disk utility" , there see disk divided 5 different "pieces"/partitions: unallocated space, ntfs filesystem , on.
don't know why happens, problem.
formatting reverts , changes unallocated space among others.

should mention: usage of hd storage of data only.

here error msg might of help:
error mounting volume details:
error mounting: mount exited exit code 12: ntfs signature missing.
failed mount '/dev/sdb1': invalid argument
device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't seem have valid ntfs.
maybe wrong device used? or whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? or other way around?

happens when try mount disk in "disk utility" after have rebooted computer.

have attached 3 print screens - before , after, can see yourselves.

picture 1: use "format drive" , choose "don't partition" - hd broken in 5 pieces= causes error messages.

picture 3: after have formatted volume > ntfs

ps. have searched , searched problem , had same problem different circumstances believe, made own thread.

first explains why disk needs formatted before can used in operating system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/disk_formatting

note this:

formatting disk use operating system , applications involves 3 different steps
please read 3 steps.

need partition 1 partition.

partition drive , format partition.

partitioning process of writing information blocks of storage device or medium allows access operating system. operating systems allow device (or medium) appear multiple devices; i.e. partitioned multiple devices.
i think find every hard disk has have @ least 1 primary partition. there can (at present time) 4 primary partitions no more. therefore, if want more 4 partitions use 1 of possible 4 primary partitions create 1 extended partition , in extended partition can create many more logical partitions.

regards.
