Layer(s) not showing up on top of background, only in layers panel...

hello all, here great....briefly, pse worked great before, i'm on newer macbook air, within system requirements pse.  maverick os.  started working pse , when tried "stamp" brush shape (whether default brushes or otherwise), program had never done before....see attached.  create new layer use brush, when try "stamp" onto background, program creates layer mask can see brush shape , new layer, shows on background icon can see in screen grab attaching here.  icon? (the teeny 1 middle right of image, black square, outlined in red, 2 red circles in middle) called apple, did few things, said wasn't on there end.  reset tools, uninstalled, reinstalled, no avail.  last night, called adobe, spent 48  minutes on phone guy told wasn't "trained" in how fix issue , superior call me within hour.  never got phone call, i'm hoping (praying, begging) out there have idea of icon is, how fix issue.  again, i've reset tools, "eye" icon on layers panel shows should visible, i've tried layers-->merge visible, i've uninstalled , reinstalled, , called adobe newbie didn't know icon  meant.  takers?!?! see below.....

because mask image same background, leaves painting the identical pixels underneath. fill top layer image solid colour , leaves show.

you can right-click little red box settings dialog.
