Thread: Sound-Blaster Extigy: No surround sound, only front left and right
hi,
have sound-blaster extigy sound card 5.1 sound system.
info, extigy external usb sound-card, ac3 , dolby digital compatible , coming ir remote control. 1 of interesting feature of card ability work without computer. have tv (line-in) , dvd player (s/pdif coaxial in) attached card and, remote control, no need fire computer control sound card.
think have problem described in bug report when try use 5.1 analog output. anyway, need s/pdif input, don't want use analog 5.1 on card i'm surprised see bug still there 2 years after.
since card works nicely s/pdif, want use option stereo music (from amarok) , surround sound (from xbmc). amarok, select "stereo analog (iec958 )" in pulse audio volume control , voila.
in xbmc, use custom audio output: hw:extigy,2 both stereo , ac3 pass-through. stereo content, no problem. ac3, there no sound coming out rear , center speakers. front left , front right working. there led on sound-card lights whenever valid ac3 signal gets in , light comes on assume audio setting in xbmc right , correct signal sent card.
1 interesting thing: made test dvd player. sends ac3 in extigy through coaxial cable. in situation, surround sound works if computer off. switch on ubuntu, rear , center speaker stop working , have unplug usb cable or switch off computer , reset sound-card (unplug ac adapter , plug back) surround sound back.
made same test optical connection , had same result.
did same test made computer boot on live cd instead of installed os , surround sound dvd still working.
in short, plug sound card in computer, 2 rear speakers , center speaker muted (or mixed front right , left, dunno exactly).
i've tried many troubleshooting tutorials , spent tons of hours trying solve issue, without luck far.
made alsa-info-script provide detailed information , attach result post.

still cannot find fix; made little step forward:
made few test on freshly installed ubuntu on same computer , found sound working (including ac3 pass-through) until installation of lirc. once lirc installed, same problem comes and, after removing lirc, cannot sound working anymore.
lirc uses alsa_usb driver described here.
on last test made, didn't set lirc use alsa_usb driver. despite that, surrond sound disappeared again.
now, how can build on finding? there alternative lirc? place report issue lirc's developers?
