How to record vocals and hear the backing track?

i using audition cc. i'm trying record vocals song (the instrumental done). want record vocals , hear instrumental @ same time in headphones. problem don't know how play instrumental while i'm recording. record vocals on audio file, , instrumental track on "multitrack session." im assuming if put vocal in multitrack session, able hear instrumental in headphones while recording. problem can't press "record" button in multitrack session, because option greyed out. appreciated, thanks!

what computer (mac or pc) , operating system using , have audio interface?

 

until have details, it's hard specific need but, in more general terms, need go edit/preferences/audio hardware , select want use recording , playback.  in windows may have go windows audio panel , select device(s) want default ones use.

 

once that's set yup, arm track want record in clicking red "r" button @ left hand end of track.  if want hear voice mixed recorded music, click on "i" button gives input in monitor.  make sure music track isn't armed record.

 

then should able click record button on main transport controls.

 

a couple of points:  may need adjust device class (hopefully asio) , buffer size minimist latency but, so, round trip via computer may give more latency comfortable.

 

for reason recommend external usb interface "direct hardware monitoring" rather basic internal cards on computers.
