Thread: Gnome Ctrl-Alt-F2 produces blank screen

i hope appropriate forum. 2 issues in 1 because core issue had work around me willing put i'll describe whole thing.

1) ever since 10.04, gnome-sheel freeze every reason have not been able determine (happens @ different times running different things). after researching (and having little time deal it), found if pressed ctrl-alt-f2 (or other f series me out of gnome) , did killall -9 on gnome-shell gnome-shell autogenerate , i'm in happy land again. presss ctrl-alt-f7 , i'm programming. can deal (though annoying) because don't have reboot , takes little time.

2) since upgrading 10.10, can no longer ctrl-alt-f2 because blank screen (my monitor falls asleep). know still there because if log in (i don't benefit of seeing on screen), killall , ctrl-alt-f7 happy gnome again. problem don't type nor remember if i've logged in , stuck in dialog can't read. need @ least figured out if can't #1 done.

in case, don't know steps take , need me figure out aolution path.

here have:

amd phenom 9950 (yeah, know old)

geforce gtx560 ti (i'm going upgrading other hardware soon)

dual monitors - hp 2511x

in additional drivers says using nvidia binary xorg driver, kernel module , vdpau library nvidia-current-updates (propietray) - unfortunately don't know version nor how find that

should next before monitor becomes statistic in workplace violence. lol
