Thread: Hard Drive Failure Data Recovery

so hard drive's been threatening fail several months now, , seems have happened. earlier programs started crashing, starting firefox each time, , after first crash, programs wouldn't run anymore. if tried in terminal, said "can't find stuff/var/sudo: input/output error". after couple of times wouldn't boot @ anymore.

though it's been threatening fail, computer's been problematic have lots of important files aren't backed up! i'm trying live boot of ubuntu.

i've been searching for hours , hours, turns dead end. of guides old , can't follow instructions.

gparted this:
inhibit polling failed: did not receive reply. possible causes include: remote application did not send reply, message bus security policy blocked reply, reply timeout expired, or network connection broken.
gddrescue doesn't exist (same testdisk):
e: unable locate package gddrescue
variants on mount command don't work since have no idea mount. guides @ "devices" on side in nautilus, doesn't exist, if plug in external hard drive (the light on glows, can't seem find anywhere on computer).

fsck booting recovery mode made blank line, hung minute, , quit.

more errors:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mount /dev/sda
mount: can't find /dev/sda in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
root@ubuntu:/etc# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/disk -o force
ntfs signature missing.
failed mount '/dev/sda1': invalid argument
device '/dev/sda1' doesn't seem have valid ntfs.
maybe wrong device used? or whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? or other way around?
[ 1324.933282] fat-fs (sda3): bogus number of reserved sectors
[ 1324.933291] fat-fs (sda3): can't find valid fat filesystem
and here's fdisk -l.
