Thread: Need some help writing a shell script for archiving jobs

hey everybody,

before request help, let me give little background company, , do...

started visual effects , digital media company. work massive amounts of data. anywhere 10gb, upwards of tb per job.

use backuppc keep rolling nightly backups of fileserver, don't lose anything. works great date backups. not, however, provide, in opinion, , adequate method archiving jobs offline media once we're finished them.

fellow ubuntu users can me.

i'm looking write script allow me pass input folder contains entire job (we use specific folder structure storing of our data), build series of tarballs, each no larger can fit on dvd (4.65gb, account size variance in manufacturing), , store in pre-specified archive folder (in case, folder located in '/media/backups/archives/jobs'.

when pass folder script via terminal, automatically create sub-folder withing archives/jobs folder matches name of job.

i'm sure decent amount of shell scripting knowledge in no time @ all, unfortunately, i'm artist, , not programmer, have no idea start.

guys provide appreciated!!
