Thread: Hard drive positions on cable and jumper settings

i want install ubuntu on friend of mine's dell desktop pc inhered son not able contact. pc running sluggish windows xp.
pc has 2 pata hdds.
1 hdd of 40gb positioned @ end of signal cable other 150gb hdd in middle.
40gb hdd jumpered (i believe on pins 7&8 , 5&6). 150gb hdd not.
have booted ubuntu live cd , gparted shows middle drive boot. both drives have windows systems installed on them , user data on 40gb end drive. not know windows system booted , used data accessed in on 40gb hdd.
advice please on should position drives on signal cable , jumper settings needed.

(an afterthought. of course remove 40gb hdd , put 150gb hdd on end of cable. jumper settings please?)
(second afterthought. jumper settings 7&8 believe)

there no standard pata hard drive jumper numbers. have no idea pins 7-8 , 5-6 mean - different on every make , model of drive.

should able find key on every individual drive how set jumpers specific setting. there 3 standard settings: master, slave, , cable select (cs). if set each drive cable select, position on cable (which connector) determines whether master drive or slave drive on cable. if want choose them no matter drive on cable, set 1 drive master, 1 slave. bit of trial , error required; have seen drives not talk drive controller when set cs vs. master , vice versa.

if don't want remove drives physically find out how set jumpers (from key on drive label), you'll have figure out manufacturers , model numbers , try googling them find out jumper block keys can correctly set master , slave or cs.
