Thread: How secure is Linux?

so, comes you, , shoulder surfing going everyday pc use. hear cry, "ah, that's not windows! it?!". explanation you're running linux met blank stare , follow question; "what's that? why using it?" (assuming we're talking joe public here).

1 of points made linux not few people bother writing malicious code - malicious code going have tough time getting system. long term, computer running linux might need reformatting cosmetic reasons, decreasing performance unlikely become issue (whereas 1/2 months of windows use drags pc down).

how secure linux? think there might firewall running system, users installing , wanting working system out of box (read: myself), configuring isn't bother with. far i'm aware, no 1 bothers running av software either (hopefully can poll on issue). don't, though coming on windows, it's i'm considering.

want throw 1 wide open really, , hear opinions of ordinary users.

...is little dated nonetheless insightful

linux { imho } ... not install unless system owner approves it.

not cover data. possibly in form of scripts or byte code might dropped browser. abusing plug-in mechanism possibly, or maybe way ... use separate user logon sensitive web app e.g. turbotax, e/bill pay ...

leads big concern today ,that being hackers trying harder malware distribution channel... "app store" phones ...

worse seems "firmware" in hardware devices may target. it's topic love chew on { doesn't make sysops happy }

note there concern here in linux land on new intel firmware designed make sure op-sys components signed before loaded ...

remember: digital signature not authenticates sender -- insure content of transmittal not altered somewhere along way
