Thread: "No boot disk has been detected" even after reinstalling grub

i moved , decided keep old hard drive precise installed on first partition (now sda1) , /home on sda3 (swap in middle) leave old computer , put hard drive new one. have not swapped hard drive 1 came computer (it had windows installed) , tried boot got message "error: no boot disk has been detected or disk has failed." i've tried number of things solve problem, including reinstalling grub several times (which more complicated sounds, because apparently current computer grub expects have separate partition flagged "bios_grub", took me while figure out). no matter i've tried, turn on computer , same message no boot disk.

i've tried several steps. first tried running "grub-install" failed error message saying couldn't find /boot/grub write , asking if had mounted partition. got whether or not mounted partition. tried reinstalling ubuntu live cd , kept telling me go , create partition marked use "reserved bios boot partition", although offered no way of doing within installer.

i've tried installing boot repair, told me needed bios partition @ least told me how (from gparted, create parition, leave unformatted, , flag "bios_grub"). tried boot repair default options , rebooted same error (the output attempt here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1276233/). tried advanced options, including removing previous grub , upgrading newest version , installing on both sda , sda1. again rebooted , got same error message there no boot disk (output attempt here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1277022/).

may try again reinstall ubuntu, although i'm not sure problem go away because think ubuntu installer writes grub in same way did.

ideas? i've installed ubuntu many many times on past 8 or years on many computers , have never had problem of computer not recognizing hard drive ubuntu , grub installed on bootable.

thanks!

i don't know how tied reinstall grub2, , how boot-repair tried it, can see @ top of results core.img file can't found correctly.

try this. 12.04 cd , boot in live mode. open terminal, , reinstall grub2:
code:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
reboot without cd , see how goes.
