Thread: Intermittently won't boot.

i have fresh install of ubuntu on laptop.

want preface knowledge linux noob. installed ubuntu on laptop express purpose of learning linux. being said computer sciences major , have worked in years, entirely in windows environment. while pretty computer...savvy in general, don't know in way of *nix command line commands , such.

anyways, installed ubuntu live cd. did run trouble installing black blinking cursor, able around setting 'nomodeset' parameter.

anyways, got installed, worked great, grabbed updates ubuntu software center, grabbed few updates, practiced using ssh linux account in school's computers, etc etc.

issue intermittently same black blinking cursor option on bootup. makes os selection screen every time, boot fine, other hangs on black screen blinking cursor after choose os boot into. can't seem figure out determining factor is. if happens, manually reboot 2 or 3 times until goes away, frustrating, , bit worrisome because (and imagination) seems increasing in frequency. example, have gotten 1 successful boot out of 7 attempts while writing on desktop. won't boot no matter how many times try, if let sit 15 minutes or boots fine.

once in ubuntu seems run fine , cool, run hot during bootup process. many times boot ubuntu fine, run cool, first time reboot stuck in loop, , have let 'cool down.' before boot again.

seems other people have had similar issues , caused graphics card driver incompatibility ati or nvidia graphics cards, , that's 'nomodeset' parameter comes in.

however, laptop using integrated intel graphics. also, in experience, driver incompatibilities, ones stop computer booting, aren't intermittent. either work or don't manually rebooting few times doesn't make problem temporarily go away.

did try setting 'nomodeset' parameter pressing 'e' on os selection screen, , still hung up, though time hung on purple screen, no text. next time tried 'nomodeset' got bunch of text , hung on:

[0.305025] nmi watchdog enabled, takes 1 hw-pmu counter.
[0.305129] booting node 0, processors #1
[0.424438] nmi watchdog enabled, takes 1 hw-pmu counter.
[0.424542] #2
[0.532213] nmi watchdog enabled, takes 1 hw-pmu counter.
[0.532320] #3

tried booting (recovery mode) , made to:

[0.305025] nmi watchdog enabled, takes 1 hw-pmu counter.
[0.305129] booting node 0, processors #1
[0.424438] nmi watchdog enabled, takes 1 hw-pmu counter.
[0.424542] #2

thing struck me being out of sorts during boot line:

[0.312575] pebs disabled due cpu errata

in case helps laptop asus ua46e-bal7. not having usb devices plugged in. dual-booting windows 7, though had not yet booted win7 until after happened, merely test see if having trouble (so far seems boot fine every time). while brand new me, refurbed hardware issue isn't out of question, , text logging seems indicate cpu issue, doesn't explain why works fine in windows.

again, if windows machine able troubleshoot it. boot safemode, check driver incompatibilities, run 1 of bootable hardware diagnostic disks have, perform repair installation of windows, etc. linux don't know begin.

running memtest, may try burn-in stress testing form bootable disc have. feels overheating issue, maybe, again, works flawlessly in windows , once it's booted ubuntu. @ loss.

i have same problem in ubuntu 12.10, did happen me in past on same machine. don't think has graphics card... did post bug report?

later edit: disabling acpi in boot options (acpi=off) helped booting in recovery mode
