Thread: ATI Graphics Pooched after 12.10 upgrade? Here's what worked for me.

the great thing ubuntu doesn't work... until does. let me preface thread stating i'm not ubuntu guru--i can figure out enough dangerous. i'm sure in next few days or weeks, there far better, more comprehensive threads on how fix these issues.

i'm writing because had figure out myself, , couldn't find solution on forums. relevant people older ati card that's been cut out of support amd, making newer catalyst builds unavailable.

if, me, upgraded, , greeted blank desktop, no unity, read on:

old driver doesn't work new kernel or x. so, after experimentation, here's worked me:

(for ultranoobs, used be, make sure know root password. if not, before dropping x, open terminal, set root password 'sudo passwd')

1) exit x, ctrl-alt-f1, log in. stop lightdm, command 'lightdm service stop' allow tinkering x.

2) nuke fglrx, following instructions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/x/troublesho...o_purge_-fglrx

3) now, create xorg.conf file typing:

a) x -configure (or xorg -configure)
b) produced error message me, handily ignored, more importantly created xorg.conf.new.
c) move/rename newly created file typing
'mv xorg.conf.new /etc/x11/xorg.conf' (without 's)

4) reboot

5) you'll lucky was, , work.

again, worked me. forced ubuntu use open source radeon driver, rather **** around non-working fglrx. hope helps limp along until more knowledgeable chimes in. again, not expert.

cheers! i'm going use little rockstar dude now, i've been looking @ whole time i've typed this.

note problem doesn't apply "old" cards.
