Thread: How to access files on external HDD that won't mount?

oh well, here go. undoubtedly noobish question, please gentle me...

time ago bought fujitsu siemens 500gb hdd. 1 day stopped working. precise: plug in, blue light comes on, , goes click click whirr click click whirr click click whirr whirr whirr (repeat necessary).

had of stuff on drive backed up, malfunction not great loss. bought new hdd , continued normal.

have decided want try , fix fujitsu siemens drive, or @ least retrieve files retrievable. problem is, doesn't mount. light comes on, makes whirry sounds, computer doesn't see it.

there way @ files on drive? if so, how? (i no nothing data retrieval, bit of n00b speak appreciated. i'm using ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on packard bell easynote laptop.

cheers!

that sounds kind of grim. if drive making kinds of noises, think drive has mechanical failure (possibly) , it's not going easy (maybe not possible) recover.

however, found article intriguing. article suggests long bios can see hard drive, might still have chance (albeit slim) recover data:

seems cool rainy day project try anyway.
