have found difficult getting working system due driver problems. appreciate drivers changing , kernels changing cause need reinstall drivers , when required. reasons underlying in fact imo ubuntu struggling cherish barely working pc.

amount of unanswered posts, people posting saying know answer , not posting answers, people posting solutions no explanantion or reference sources, original posters not updating threads giving worked them of things adding frustration of pc running bag of spanners know, "is there definitive, crystal clear, step step how install nvidia proprietary driver?

gist of advice have found in these forums suggest using nouveau "if works you" fine if want check emails , intend using pc more demanding applications being able change icon launcher size need proprietary drivers beckons.

keeping post short time seems better spent studying nvidia readme before trying not recommended way (especially noobs me) of installing driver direct nvidia. overlooking or type error break ubuntu.

if additional/proprietary drivers used - ubuntu breaks drivers lol


reading nvidia readme not ubuntu specific sure more experienced ubuntuist shed constructive light on subject sure nooby thing in not ubuntu or drivers @ fault how being used.

what version nvidia card/chip , version ubuntu.

older versions, had boot nomodeset , offered install nvidia driver , worked.

12.10 forgot headers nvidia not install. if download headers , manually install nvidia, works.

has worked me, install headers & dpkg update.

need headers first:
when see in desktop no icon or bar, right click change desktop background
when window appear, click settings, see system settings window.
next, click on software source, go in additional drivers tab.
select 3 rd option, using video driver nvidia or amd... fglrx-upgrade

cntrl-alt f1 or f2 terminal works
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
# reason purge there several versions, if know have different nvidia use that:
sudp apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-current
