Thread: How to restart gnome-shell?

after killing process, bash syntax indicate follow command? tried ‘kill 3171 && gnome-shell’ example, doesn’t work.

trying kill , restart gnome-shell...if kill gnome-shell id top, open windows revert first workspace...i want maintain 43 windows organized in respective workspaces restart gnome shell. gnome 3.0 did automatically...like kill gnome-shell process id , restart automatically , windows still in correct workspace...but starting in gnome 3.2, if memory serves me correctly, i’d lose boarders around windows , have use virtual terminal kill x server , have start applications again...the same true gnome 3.4.1 running on 64bit ubuntu 12.04 right now.

googled ‘restart gnome shell’ , found useful ‘cheat sheet’ says can restart gnome window manager initiating alt + f2 , typing either ‘r’ or ‘restart’... sort of looking for, upon trying out, while kill gnome-shell, upon restart crashed. lost workspaces , couldn’t alt + tab console type gnome-shell start again. logged vt , killed x server. problem trying avoid. entered startx gave me bs nvidia driver module error. rebooted , surprisingly x loaded without errors. alas, had open programs again.

else try restart gnome-shell?
