Thread: Preparing to install Linux Mint onto Windows 7 64

hi,

[background]
i'm getting new 1t hdd on so-so gaming rig because tired of win7's getting malwared , slow.

hours spent reviewing, downloading, running "repair" , maintenance programs win7 driving me dual-drive system have 1 win7 native drive , 1 linux native drive. linux drive everyday computing , windows drive starcraft 2, steam, , netflix (unless work on linux).

searching forums find individual problems dual-boot systems using win7 64, i'd advice pre-install. problems people report newer systems, windows 7, , latest versions of ubuntu linux little worrisome .

i've made win7 rescue cd , boot-repair cd. in case.

[plan]
idea install new wd black 1t drive when comes today , run cinnamon mint 13 dvd install on drive.

expect have win7 64 on physical hdd1 (1.4tb) , linux mint on physical hdd2.

seems simplest way proceed. should work ez-pz, right? i'll have no-fuss dual-boot system no partitioning headaches.

i'd seems complicated put linux on hdd1 , have windows 7 on hdd2. problem back-up copy of windows 7 on separate hidden partition of hdd1 (thanks dell). i'd kinda games run off wd black harddrive.

[gratitude]
taking time read this, , if have advice, links, or recent threads know of covering situation--stuff should know--i'd hear it.

description local fixed disk
compressed no
file system ntfs
size 1.35 tb (1,487,107,256,320 bytes)
free space 887.15 gb (952,568,496,128 bytes)

moved other os.

not know mint, best keep windows first drive. older versions not let change, not sure newer ones.

system uefi capable. windows installed in uefi or bios mode. need have systems installed in same mode have them work well. ubuntu 64 bit has uefi mode, not sure if mint has or not.

if drive gpt partitioned , first partition efi (fat32) in uefi mode. if first partition 100mb boot/repair windows ntfs partition in bios/mbr mode.

prefer keep each drive bootable on own. way when 1 drive fails can @ least boot other drive. copy data 1 other backup dvds archive of more important data.

want smaller / (root) partition. large / partitions having issue booting. not sure if bios or grub2 bug.

if bios/mbr these good, installer has not changed much.
install external drive 11.04. second drive.
installer version has not changed still guide except not recommend separate /boot systems. older systems may need it. , large / (root) partitions. bios/mbr
