i run ubuntu 12.10 unity , decided try out different desktop environments , installed lubuntu. @ point worked fine. switch environments @ login screen no problem. further experiment new interfaces, installed xubuntu. installation went fine can't switch gui's anymore. login screen, can still click drop menu select different environments. clicking on lubuntu or xubuntu doesn't anything. i'm 'stuck' unity reason. there no "ok" button i've seen before, list of environments. there obvious i'm missing here? ahead of time help. fixed problem. have click on environment want load hold tab , press enter. sorry wasting thread. there wasn't information find anywhere else. took trial , error. same/similar symptoms have been reported many times , have read through lot of material (including sticky post in forum), tried lot of suggestions no avail. possible have missed information, frustrated , have nothing left post here. have dell latitude e6510 (integrated intel hd graphics). had ubuntu 12.04 64-bit running on it, more or less smoothly. when kernel upgraded version 3.2.0.32 (from 3.2.0.31), not boot more. after grub menu, screen go blank eventually. hear sound effects login screen, there blank screen. no switching ctrl-alt-f1. 'fix' booting previous kernel (3.2.0.31). after while, decided upgrade ubuntu 12.10 (through update manager) hope new kernel (which 3.5.0.18 @ point) fix it. did not. in last few days, tried suggestions. looked kernel mode switching issue intel graphics. kernel boot options such "nomodeset", i915.modeset=0 (or =1), apic=off, acpi_osi="linux", noapic, nolapic made no difference. purging , reinstallin...

hi, have installed , uninstalled ubuntu , of it's variants more once, maybe i'm not absolute beginner, i'm still pretty ignorant. issue is, when boot ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu (even mint) usb stick , choose install it, installation window won't past "preparing install... " part, when checks if have enough disk space, internet connection , power source. wouldn't gets stuck because i'm able quit , works fine, nothing crashes. won't go further when hit "continue". i've tried booting on pc , managed go beyond part, i'm sure usb stick isn't problem. also, happened distros mentioned, something's wrong laptop. i'm guessing it's got partitions. hdd partitioned so: window's c: ( ~200 gb); d: ( ~8 gb) , 1 made long ago, isn't unallocated space ( 30 gb) should erase partition? having no unallocated space somehow causing problem? can fix/do need while booted usb stick?
