Thread: 3 Monitors, Ubuntu 12.04, Gnome 3, 2 nvidia cards, WITH xrandr or xinerama?
ok. have been banging head against wall on week trying 3 monitors work.
have:
1 - nvidia 8600 gt 512mb pciex16
1 - nvidia gt 240 1gb pciex16
not running in sli (obviously). have tried use tutorials few templates, way nvidia-settings, etc etc etc.. hear, xinerama doesnt gnome 3 because of compositing, although have read lot using xrandr instead, , getting compositing working, alas, cannot. either crashes x , have replace xorg.conf backup, or defaults gnome-classic desktop, , on top of that, when default, keeps adding more , more panels.
basically, want able use 3 monitors (yes, in windows) drag , drop different windows.
have xorg-edit, still not sure on how set up? there way to:
a> compositing working 3 monitors, 2 nvidia cards, xinerama, , gnome 3?
or
b>use twinview 3 monitors (i have heard can done manually editing xorg.conf)
or
c>set xrandr draw 3 monitors compositing.
or
d>use separate x each monitor, , able use gnome compositing, drag between 3
or
e>anything. lol. want work.
can provide appreciated. btw, running ubuntu mini install gnome. works great this. can run fine 2 monitors , compositing, not 3.
also, best gui tool editing xorg.conf? im not finding date @ all, , understandable humans. haha. im engineer trade, , have been working computers long time, xorg.conf stuff confusing crap out of me. lol
thanks!
people use , recommend nvidia drivers because give performance, however, don't play nice native tools. cannot set 2 monitors on 1 video card other nvidia-settings.
backup xorg.conf (better safe sorry). run:
now can use "save xorg configuration file" option in display menu. hope of getting nvidia work , changes persist after rebootingcode:gksudo nvidia-settings
of changes require reboot xorg, if don't save changes xorg.conf nothing happen, , can save changes if have permission write on xorg.conf, , super user can write xorg.conf, hence need "gksudo".
