Thread: sudo chown -R root:users "Operation not permitted"

on raspberry pi os xbian 0.82

using guide http://elinux.org/r-pi_nas
setup samba share

changing permissions of share
code:
sudo chown -r root:users /home/shares/public
gives me lots , lots of
code:
chown: changing ownership of `/home/shares/public/': operation not permitted
and files , folders in it.

share mountpoint usb hardrive fat32

going wrong here???

unless have group users, not think can use command.

never work on fat32 or ntfs windows formatted partitions not support ownership nor permissions.

ownership , permissions of vfat / ntfs set @ time of mounting. source of confusion.
howto: mount ntfs partitions specific ownership/permissions - wormzy
