Thread: Convert an existing DEB package to use a more up to date official source of a program

hello everyone,

i'm trying first time create own deb package starting existing one.

here's i'd do:

take information of existing package in form of .dsc file
download related files (original source, dsc, patches) via dget
replace official source more date version software creator
compile , upper version deb package

now, software in question zabbix , package example here @ packages.ubuntu.com.
tried replace source package 1 provided on official zabbix site i'm unsure how proceed.
example, how can update dsc file new checksums? how can update changelog , control file?
did manually , tried build package on 12.04 machine says "missing build dependencies".
fix issue tried missing build dependencies running "apt-get build-dep" command can't pull required dependencies...

i'm lost
