Thread: HDD possibly dying

hi all!

noticed problem mythbuntu box. in middle of playback, stop. not happen @ same place in playback every time, , happens on many different files. looked in dmesg, , found lot of errors related sdc, western digital caviar green 1.5 tb disk. i've posted log of recent output of dmesg here.

so, i've started investigate smartmontools, , found long self-test:

mmmmm, interesting... have no clue means...

since error seemed occur rather randomly , on many different files, i've been guessing not simple localized error, , should buy new 1 asap, otoh, if can rescued, save me money too... so, can situation saved?


have backup of critical data on disk, pita if disk fails anyway, nice know if should buy asap anyway.

ok, here how understand values. important columns @ are:
- value: current value of attribute
- worst: worst value of attribute now
- thresh: manufacturer considers value on hdd damaged

important attributes at:
- raw_read_error_rate: points read errors, either of heads or due surface damage
- seek_error_rate: errors encountered during repositioning of heads
- reallocated_sector_ct: counts movement of bad sectors other sectors
- multi_zone_error_rate: errors encountered during write operations

since there have been considerable (200) errors detected, seems idea me replace drive.
