Thread: GRUB or partition problem

my old pentium iii 80gb drive has lost ability boot. has been running ubuntu several years, , on ubuntu 12.04

"error 18: selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported bios"

afternoon try boot, never gets way.

gives error: "inconsistent file system structure"
, offers list of os boot, returns "inconsistent file system structure" error each item on list.

naturally, tried boot cd (ubuntu 9.1 , ubuntu 10.10 have on hand, neither 1 boot cd can pull data off or fix grub.

advice on accessing data or restoring grub if cannot boot cd?

. . .

i downloaded , burned cd -- debian's boot repair iso -- ought boot , repair grub 2.

boots pc, , memory test runs beautifully, hangs when trying boot either 32 bit or 32 bit failsafe modes.
